April 2009 - England / Wales - Dover

The kids packed in the car, going through the tunnel from Calais, France to Dover, England.

We stopped in Dover at a park where you can walk along the cliffs. It overlooks the ferry port.

The cliffs really are white.

Heidi saw this sign and thought it said "Publio Foot Path." On closer inspection, she realized it said Public Foot Path.

April 2009 - England / Wales - Stonehenge

One of the first stops on the trip was Stonehenge.

One of the only photos of the entire family on the trip.

This is by the parking lot on the way out - a couple of the stones used in Stonehenge or other similar stone circles. We're not sure who this kid was -- he wouldn't get out of our picture, though.

April 2009 - England / Wales - Bath

The Roman bath's in Bath -- they had a really interesting audio guide, including one geared toward kids.

We also went on a walking tour of Bath with a guide - here we are by the Royal Crescent.

While we were eating lunch in the square, a man sat down, took off his suit jacket, extended his arms, and attempted to get some Vitamin D.

April 2009 - England / Wales - Cotswolds / Stratford-Upon-Avon

We went to two villages in the Cotswolds, Chipping Campden and Stow on the Wold. Mallory was happy to see a store with her name on it.

The boys took turns tickling each others' feet in the stockades.

This might have been called Sheep Street - just a narrow alley.

We then went to Stratford-Upon-Avon, checked in to the B&B, and walked into the downtown area and did a walking tour, seeing some of the William Shakespeare sites around town. This is Nash's house.

And here's Shakespeare's birthplace.

After the tour we took a row boat out on the Avon river.

The kids each have such different ideas of how to pose for a photo of a Hamlet statue.

We ate dinner here by the narrow riverbarges parked in Stratford.

April 2009 - England / Wales - Warwick Castle

The boys loved the trebuchet demonstration.

Me: "Luke, are you sure you want to buy that hat?"
Luke: "Yes Dad, I'm sure I want to buy it."
Me: "You're really sure you want to spend your own money to buy that hat?"
Luke: "Yes, Dad. I'll even pay for it myself."

April 2009 - England / Wales - Conwy

We drove to northern Wales to the city of Conwy, which has a castle and then old walls surrounding the city. We checked in to a B&B just outside of town, and walked into the city for some dinner. The town is right on the coast, so just outside the city wall is a small harbor. Here's a photo of Grant's and Mallory's muscle man poses by the mussels statue.

The next morning we walked around the city walls.

Grant and Nash at the top of one of the towers, with the castle at the opposite end in the background.

Luke and Grant are confused by all of the signs that are posted in Welsh and English.

April 2009 - England / Wales - Snowdonia National Park

On Tuesday morning we drove from Conwy to Snowdonia National Park to the Cwm Idwal area, to hike around Llyn Idwal.

Luke is about to take a bite of his Sally Lunn bun we picked up in Bath. It is basically a large hamburger bun. We're not sure what all the hype is about.

While stopping here for a snack, Luke was eating a pear. He was holding the pear sideways by the narrow end and taking bites out of the large end, and he said pears are basically turkey drumsticks for vegetarians. I'll never look at a pear the same way again.

April 2009 - England / Wales - York

We drove from Wales to York, and spent the afternoon / early evening walking around the downtown area. Here's Luke & Grant by the York Minster. After dinner, we went on one of the Ghost Hunt tours -- it was mildly entertaining.
One of the gates to the city.

St. Mary's Abbey ruins in York -- built between 1000 and 1200, and destroyed in the 1500's.

Two old men on a bench feeding peanuts to the squirrels and bread to the pigeons.

Old catapult tower -- the walls around this city date back to the Roman times, as evidenced by the stripe of red bricks.

Shopping area called the Shambles.
