Rothenburg ob der Tauber & Heidelberg - Dec 2008

The boys' last day of school was the 12th of December - so they had plenty of time off before Christmas. I worked until the 16th, then took off the rest of the year. We took a quick 2-day trip to Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Heidelberg. It is only a 3 hour drive to Rothenburg, but we got into town late. We saw a bit of the Christmas market and got crepes, wurst, and other warm food to eat -- it was really cold. At 9:00 we went on the Night Watchman tour -- a tour of the city with an English-speaking guide who told about Rothenburg in its glory days in the middle ages. It was pretty interesting, on its own, but the tour guide was pretty funny, so that made it worth it to walk around in the cold at night.

Small door...

One of the oldest buildings in Rothenburg -- parts of it date back to the 900s.

This is inside the medieval crime & punishment museum. These are masks, which people had to wear as punishments for various crimes.

Grant ran in to one of his friends from school.

On the way back to Wachtberg, we went to Heidelberg. We first went to the castle -- good views of the town from up there.

Inside the castle, they have what they claim to be one of the world's largest wine barrels. It was made a couple of hundred years ago, but apparently when they filled it up, it started to leak.
